Open my eyes and the dream world just gives way to the heavy light of day and I wonder, can I prepare for the pain I do not know, for the hidden undertow to pull me under? Do I really wanna spend my days trying to shield from the myriad ways that you can break an unsuspecting father's heart? As I wash it all away, the greying trim of another close shave I marvel that I find the strength to start. 'Cause I'm not ready for this life I'm off balance, but I'm fine and I'm rising for the day, for the role I've yet to play now anyway ready as I'll ever be. The cloth of my coat, though it's hard as hell to you, I can't make it bullet proof by believing. My collar won't be the protection that I need for a skin so quick to bleed, still I'm leaving. Do I really wanna spend my days trying to shield from the myriad ways that you can break an unsuspecting father's heart? What will my final downfall be? where did I last leave the goddamn keys? bring the toil to keep my body from falling apart. 'Cause I'm not ready for this life I'm off balance, but I'm fine and I'm rising for the day, for the role I've yet to play now anyway ready as I'll ever be. And all I see is black birds crossing the street, and all I read is death. If I don't find Sir Gawain's handkerchief at the bottom of my sock drawer, what will be left? 'Cause I'm not ready for this life I'm off balance, but I'm fine and I'm rising for the day, for the role I've yet to play now anyway ready as I'll ever be.

These bitter days when fear is cheap and easy when now and then you hear the boiler hiss, just take my hand and we'll go down together and find out where the bottom truly is 'cause there's some things in this world that can't be altered by any muscle strain or sleepless night and watching as we panic, break, and falter, we wonder what of this can be put right. But while I can't fight the feeling of falling down I can pick another up No one knows when we'll touch ground but everyone can raise a cup raise a toast to feeling found 'cause if we fall forever, we're going down together. normal is a relative prediction, a forecast of the day ahead of you funny just how quickly we'll adapt it and adopt it as the once and always truth 'cause even as the sun gets lost for seasons even as the weather takes its time even as we get so used to freezing so this all will give to better clime And while I can't fight the feeling of falling down I can pick another up No one knows when we'll touch ground but everyone can raise a cup raise a toast to feeling found 'cause if we fall forever, we're going down together. Tomorrow in the light we'll deal with all the wreckage and the real, to build again what came to dust. In the morning sweetness trust Fght the feeling of falling down 'cause I can pick another up. No one knows when we'll touch ground but everyone can raise a cup raise a toast to feeling found 'cause if we fall forever, we're going down together.

The Kill 03:50
How'd it come to this? Into a corner, backed in by the fire, hear it hiss. And there's no easier out, no secret passage, so what are we to choose? no simple answer, no, no exit plan, sir think it through and you make the call. They said get out, get out, the building is on fire! They said stay in, stay in, the streets are hotter still! I said just what will it be? We're getting to the wire. And I can feel the flames as they come in for the kill I will not hold still won't let the fumes and cinder have their endless bender fill, and there might not be much that I can change just by power of will if all this mortal coil is only blood to boil until it feeds the flames It's not the end of days, it's something far, far worse.

about

When COVID-19 really hit, all I could do with myself was sit and make pop music. Like, super sugary pop music. Generally, I have learned that in order to keep songwriting fresh for myself, I need to be judicious about choosing when to embrace and when to resist my artistic instincts. Not so on this one. Here, I said a whole lot of yes to my instincts. In these supremely uncertain days, I think my brain needs to candy coat the reality of what is going down around me simply to understand it. Here are three songs from that process, tracked and arranged at home in isolation in March and April 2020.

Special thanks to Chris Ploss for the mixes, to Samuel B. Lupowitz for bringing all three tunes to life with his incredible playing, and to Steven J. Goldman for the master. You guys rock.
