In summer 2017, I spent a few hours with my bud Samuel B Lupowitz recording an EP all about my experience as a teacher. After 10 years, I’ve come to the understanding that teaching is fundamentally an exercise in empathy. You come into the lives of these people-- students and coworkers alike -- all with their own vivid lives and perspectives and baggage, and your task is to build with them in ways that requires serious mutual understanding. Throughout my career, I’ve run into people who either make it very easy, or outrageously difficult to do that. Some of those people are the ones who inspired this EP.

My new EP, Kid Stuff, is all about empathizing with the people I’ve worked with as a teacher. Kids mostly, but not exclusively. It seemed wrong to write on this subject in any other style than punk pop-- the music that I obsessed over as an early teen, particularly that of Blink 182. Anybody who downloaded Enema of the State on Limewire oughtta be able to pick up a few homage moments here and there. There’s just something magical for me about that combination of sugar and angst that sends me right back through the wormhole to that experience, and I’ve loved intentionally expressing my inner awkward tweenager.
