about
Christmas of 2020, we gave our daughter, Carly, a space suit. She was (and is) fascinated by outer space, and so the gift was a home run. She immediately put it on, and began slow-motion walking around the living room like an astronaut on the moon. In that instant, I felt like I could see the future. Whether she goes on to fulfill her current dream of visiting Jupiter, or conquers some other frontier, she will inevitably become her own conquests and her own person independent of us. It's nothing I hadn't heard before, repeated so often to me by others that I kind of stopped hearing it, but here it was, and here I was, finally understanding it.

lyrics
I'm supposed to take me out of this equation that we're in
But I never was so selfless or so pure
But I'll set myself aside enough to watch as you begin
to set your sights and dreams on distant shores
No matter what strange galaxies or frontiers you'll explore,
Every single step will make your father proud
I just want to remember before you're headed out the door
Before you're cleared for launch and we're all counting down.
Space girl
Coming up from Venus
But you're destined for adventure out on Mars
Space girl
Right now it feels like playing
Though the day that you blast off will break my heart
I'm gonna give you what you need to hunt the stars.
The thing about the cosmos is you never really know
At a given time what's really up or down
And the vastness of it all or just how much there is to see
In trying to chart it's depths a man can drown
But you are not a man, you're much more powerful than that
You've got a razor mind and super human will
And I want to be there too, but I'm not meant to fly
But you can have me right beside you still.
Space girl
Coming up from Venus
but you're destined for adventure out on Mars
Space girl
Right now it feels like playing
Though the day that you blast off will break my heart
I'm gonna give you what you need to hunt the stars.
So take your pictures kid and I'll do the same
And we'll catch up when you get home
You can take this song with your protein pills
So out in space you're not alone.
Space girl
Coming up from Venus
But you're destined for adventure out on Mars
Space girl
Right now it feels like playing
Though the day that you blast off will break my heart
I'm gonna give you what you need to hunt the stars.
